unwanted noise using Sonar LE 8.5

for some reason when recording my guitar i get a little sizzle even when it's clean & i have played around with the input levels so i'm sure it's not clipping (the red clip light doesn't come on...not when I hit a chord really hard) yet i keep getting a little distortion like it is clipping.
then on top of that after i get a few tracks recorded & i start using a few plug in effects it starts to glitch & crackle a bit.
anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

Hi Mark ...

First off, your interface is fine. Getting the "rice crispies" could be a number of things. I use Sonar 8.5 producer and I know the DAW HATES it if there is another sound card working. Make sure your onboard soundcard is completely disabled. You can do that from the Devices Manager - don't uninstall, just disable.

I always make sure my latency buffer in the Audio options is set to the lowest level for recording, then higher if I am mixing. If you find you are getting dropouts then just increase the buffer slightly.

Try those 2 options. If it's still giving you problems then please post the specs of your machine.

Also worth noting that you could still be clipping without the red light coming on ... lots of times those red lights are the "way into clipping" indicator, but clipping can be happening before that.  The other issues you mention are not related to this and Mick is giving you good advice there.

thanks...i'll give it a whirl tonight & see what happens.

this might be a dumb question...since i also use this laptop for things other than recording & don't always have the interface hooked up will i have to enable the onboard soundcard when not using the interface to get sound?
