Basil expressed an interest in doing a rock classic cover so we settled on All Right Now by the awesome Free. Even though this appears to be a simple song I think all of us learned something new about it as we progressed. I'm sure my fellow collaborators will agree that this was a fun number to reproduce :)

Andy pulled out all the stops to produce a great piece of bass playing that was very close to the original. Parry jumped in on the drums and proved that he is more than a great guitar player and singer. A man of many talents. Basils' vox on this track nearly blew my socks off! Stunning vocals and BV's. Steffen jumped in to mix and master the project in his usual fantastic style. Even though this is a cover, it was truly a great collaborative effort. Well done everyone! :)

Thanks Mick!!

I hadnt done a cover in a long time - and this one turned out super and a very enjoyable experience.

A great team of people which helped this collab to be conducted with a joyful spirit.

Mick Kossof  - your guitar playing is sublime, sounds just like the record!
Parry Kirke -   even though drums is not your primary instrument, you did a fab job, most importantly you got the "feel".
Basil Rogers - what can i say? top class vocals!!! and you picked up every vocal riff there was to perfection. good to have another great vocalist on board MCS.
Steffen - a great mix you've got to be proud of - this mix has clarity without compromising on the power. one of your best. your hard work brought the best out of every instrument.

For me it was a huge learning experience trying to even get close to the talent that is Andy Fraser. We dont hear too much about him nowadays but listening to this record once again brought home to me what a great inventive bass player he is. Huge array of chops with great melodic phrasing. His work on the higher registers is out of the world. There was no way I could emulate that exactly I hung in there and tried my best. Not to forget the great tone he got!!

Thanks again for having me on board!

Andy

Nice job gang!

Production and performance are spot on.  8)

Mike - your vox are great.

Love the breakdown!

Sounds to me like some of the lead wasnt lined up. All the parts are there, just out of time. might want to look at that.

Thanks Nick, turned out pretty good. Think my lead guitar is a bit out of time because I did it at the beginning when I was doing the bed track to a metronome. I should have re tracked it after all the parts were in.

Mick,

It Happens!

I still think it can be saved with a little nudgeing and editing.

Sounds good all the sane!

Very impressed with the vocals on this, I think you've done a really good job all around boys :)

I had a listen to the original after yours, don't know if you were trying to do your own thing or make it as close as possible but this is what I picked up between the versions.

I would say the drums sound drier on the original Free version, but there's a remix done 1991 where they seemed to plaster it in reverb ( which sounds awful ) so you picked the middle ground between really dry and too much verb.

The mix keeps the excellent lead vocal front and centre...actually the verse guitar on the original steps on the vocal more than the cover, so in that sense the mix improves on the original. Drums have a bit of a coloured lower mid sound, might be from the reverb partly. If you wanted to make it more like the Free version you could look at eq-ing the reverb return to tuck it in more behind the drums and vocals.

I know Steffen doesn't like very dry mixes, but this shows it's not just a recent thing !

CD

Actually now I'm listening back to back yours sounds a bit slower in tempo ? Unless my Pc has screwed up the file. ;D

We never finish a mix... we simply abandon them.
You can't polish a turd, but you can always spray paint it GOLD
Great songs are not written, they are re-witten

Nice!! The vocals are really good.  8)  Gotta love this tune. A classic. Pretty close to the original. It does sound a tad slow to me too. Other than that, not bad!! Must have been fun to do.  8)

Thanks for listening Dave and CD, glad you like the cover. There are a few versions of this flying around - the European single, the album version and various live formats - and they are all at different timings. In the end I opted for the album version but yeah, a tad slower.

Thanks for listening guys.

Big thanks to Mick for having me on this one.

Also, I'm pretty sure this is the first time that I've worked with Andy, Basil, Mick, and Steffan, these guys are awesome!
