  • Write, rewrite, then write some more...
I forgot that I hadn't posted this as finished until I went back and was fiddeling around with the mix. Not sure it's finished, but here is the latest mix. Let me know how it sounds.

Thanks to Mr. Mom with help on key lyrics in some of the lines, and Doc, who added lots of production pieces to this one.

Benny - vocals, guitar, melody, lyrics, mixing
Mr. Mom - lyrics
Doc - guitars, bass, keyboards, drum programming

MARY DON'T STEAL MY HEART TONIGHT

It's not the way I planned it
And really I don't understand it
A simple glance that makes me fall apart

Wasn't gonna let it happen
But you can't stop a chemical reaction
When the elements of love are set to start

Now you shot me right through the heart

(Chorus)
Mary, the way you look at me
I know my world will never be the same again
How did you get in...
Mary, it only took one kiss
To know I never felt like this inside
Mary don't steal my heart tonight

The universe is going crazy
And planets are rearranging
Everything I see is in reverse

Falling for you wasn't on my list
But you've got that something I can't resist
And running away will only make it worse

You got me orbiting the earth

(Chorus)

(Bridge)
Do hearts really skip a beat
I never thought it could be true
But you've taken over me
How do you do what you do to me

(Chorus)

This is great Benny, normally I don't care for autotune, which is weird because I'm sure I could use it - haha

But you seemed to have struck a perfect balance between your regular vocals and using autotune. It really is a more modern sound... :) :)

And thank you for the props, though my contribution was very minor, mostly just throwing out a few ideas. :)
Damn it Jim! I'm a WRITER - not a Doctor!!

I prefer more natural vocals without autotune/Melodyne, whatever. But it's a great pop song, perfect produced.

Kudos guys!

Excellent Song Benny...I always like your stuff  :)

I'm a bit 50/50 on the autotune effect as it can come across as trying to sound too modern when the rest of the song isn't coming over that way. I think it's been well done though I'd like to hear it in a more natural way too - I suspect I'd choose the latter as the keeper..

I know you're trying to make improved mixes, this one has some stuff to recommend it. The balance is good, and the the instruments have a more defined role than some of your other mixes and there's no harshness either. The problem I have is it's completely lost dynamics somewhere along the road...maybe it's in the mastering...I dunno...but it sounds quite bass light and also uber-compresseed...like it's already coming out of a radio speaker...When on full range systems it shouldn't sound that way  ???

I'd like to hear a version without anything on the 2buss or any after the mix mastering type processing. I suspect some of the missing punch and depth might come back ?

Hope you don't mind the critique but I think it's the best way to improve  :)
We never finish a mix... we simply abandon them.
You can't polish a turd, but you can always spray paint it GOLD
Great songs are not written, they are re-witten
