Hi:

This is the first song as part of our group "Reality Be Damned".  We will be doing a grouping of lite jazz/showtunes.  Would love some comments on this style.  We are working on a demographic profile and feel our audience is women aged 30-60 who want to escape into a surreal world for a little while, someplace romantic and retro like in the old movies.  Please tell us what you think - as a guy, is this music something that YOU would personally listen to.  Would love your input - actually NEED your input.  Thanks everyone.  Not the final mix, could be awhile!!!!!

No Flowers in This Hotel
Hallstein Lunde - Composition/mix
Casia - Lyrics
Christina Britton - Vocals/melody
Lonnie Wilson - Bass
Raul Rodriquez Jr. - Dums/finger snaps
Avi Rosenfeld - guitar

Ahhhh, sssssssss

(V1)
There are no flowers here in this hotel
But baby, I'm under your spell
There are no fragrant roses I can smell
But baby, I can hear the church bells

(Chorus)
There's no flowers in this hotel
No Monet garden in my private Hell
When I bit the apple a worm crawled out
Now baby, I'm under
Oh, under your spell

(V2)
There's no satin sheets to shimmy
I am a walkin' on needles and pins
Over you, yeah...over you, wah
My heart.. is wear..ing thin

(Bridge)
I can keep my clothes on making love
Or swim backwards in the tub
It's just an illusion that you're mine
Like a blues song when things are fine

solo

(V3)
A fish outta water will shrivel and die
But I'm alive when I look in your eyes
When the gods of mercy are having tea
I think they forgot about me

(Chorus)
There are no flowers in this hotel
No Monet garden in my private Hell
When I bit the apple a worm crawled out
Now baby, I'm under
I'm under your spell

(Outro)
You said I was crazy when I asked too much
Did I finally run out of luck
I want a Monet garden at the end of the day
But there's no flowers in this hotel

Casia:

This has a great feel and the mood presented by Christina is very appropriate and smooth.

I enjoyed it.

Wow, ladies, well done, indeed! Fantastic vocals, Christina, great lyrics, as usual, well played and a pretty nice mix!

The only thing that doesn't sound as perfect as the rest is the midi horn section. But who can afford a real brass orchestra? ;)

Regards,
  Steffen

Always looking for opportunities to mix your songs. Feel free to ask!

Thanks Paul.  I've been listening to this one a lot and quite like the mood and feel.  Christina sounds great on this one.  Thank you for taking a listen and commenting.

Thanks Steffen.  We actually are expecting some horns.....but....but...not sure when or if it will actually happen.  If it does it will be version 2.  Horns are indeed hard to come by.

Really nice feel and perfect write for the mood.  Christina,... you own this style!

I don't usually insert critiquing in my finished forum comments but,.. you did ask so here are my thoughts.

-I second Stephens thoughts on the existing horns.  They take away from an otherwise really well soundscaped and well played song.  Unless you had the real thing or a guy like Billy doing the horns,.. I think the song stands on its own without them quite well.

-In places,.. Christina's vocals are a bit too loud.  Just requires some fader adjustments.

I think you have the right people and the right tools for this type of project.  Look forward to hearing more.

It's well done....I agree about the horns and asking Billy ....kinda spoils the mood ;D

As a guy...it's not really my kinda thing...but I wouldn't even listen to the top artist in that genre either....I can tolerate them if I see an actual show but nothing more  ;D

CD
We never finish a mix... we simply abandon them.
You can't polish a turd, but you can always spray paint it GOLD
Great songs are not written, they are re-witten

  • I'm a Bassist/songwriter Let's collaborate!!!
Nice work by all! Not feelin' the synth horns though. I would leave them out, and substitute some guitar fills. Given the lyrics , this would be more appropriate, more vibey, IMHO of course.   I LOVE this singer!!! 8)
  Looking forward to more. :)

....but, but, but the horns Tricia.   It's funny when you come back to listening to a song after awhile how you see it differently.  I LOVED this song and now I'm re-thinking the horns too.

Wow, Nicely Done Ladies! :)

Personally, i think it's just the wrong horn...

This style of music, (and Christina's voice) needs a great Sax. with a solo-ist "playing" her voice... ;)

It seems to me the Sax was created for her voice 8)

You two are "musical human dynamos" Cheers! Johnny
