Mixing Tutorial Vids

Yeah. Those a really great. It's hard to find good mixing video's. I like this guy. Kinda funny at times and I like how he mixes mainly for color. Good vids. I'd like to see more from him.

I use a very simular approach to bussing, but back end and front end busses, I have to give that a shot

That's very similar to how I do things too , although I haven't tried bussing the bass to the drum buss too I usually keep it on a seperate one and also the overheads as I don't like to hear them compressed as much as the main drum buss.

Instead of bussing all my verbs together I tend to group the faders together which has the same effect when you want to fade them up and down I guess.  Nice to see I'm doing very similar techniques to more Pro folks

It's curious... It looks like those of us who try to mix, are going on a similar way to those videos. I did knew about grouping the way he does but, I tend to do more or less the same... And yeh, CD... I put the drums in the same buss except for the overheads just because I don't like them too much compressed, LOL.

I never grouped instruments in a bus before...I usually just mix each track and send FX however I just tried the bus thing with some drum seps and it workd great...it really evens out the drums and makes them blend better.

The diagram he showed in video really helped make it easy to understand.

Drum seps go into drum buss...drum bus goes into bass bus...bass bus goes into backend bus...backend bus goes to master bus.

Only thing I cant figure out in Reaper is how to send to master bus...perhaps it just goes there automatically...not sure yet.

I don't like busses. There's always old smelly people on them so I take my car.

One of the things that really astounded me on the bus video was when he made that kick sound so great by putting a tight reverb and slap-back echo on it. All I'm used to doing is compressing the hell out of the kick so I can drive up the gain. I doubt you would want that effect on everything, a rock kick drum for instance, but it's nice to know how you can do it for other material.

BTW - This is pretty much identical to my way of mixing. Still my mixes sound like what they are: Amateur mixes.

Yeah Vincent, that's how I used to work as well. Don't you find though that you are inserting multiple instances of the same tool and setting up exactly the same parameters? Kinda kills your CPU if you have like 60 tracks or more

Never used Reaper but Sonar defaults to the main outputs, so even if you route through an interim bus, or busses, it eventually gets to the main outs. If you can hear the instruments that you have put in a bus, and you can hear the effects/tools in the bus, then it follows that it must be coming out of the mains. I guess that's right .. ?

Yeah i think Reaper defaults to main outputs as well.

Im liking this bus technique...It definately changes the sound of the mix and adds a bit of dimension in mix as well...after my first attempt the drums sounded much better and backup vocals did as well.
