This song took a loooooooooong time from the first draft to the final version. It started out as a synthetic song idea posted at the Open Music Factory, a collaboration site that no longer exists.

Dan Clancy (atljam) and Bobby Clohessy (BlackStratman) were both members of the OMF, like myself, and they got the ball rolling with their guitar contributions. Dan also wrote the first version of the lyric and did a vocal audition, but he wasn't satisfied with it himself.

Then nothing happened for a long time, until I removed the dust from it and posted the song here. Eric Savoie took the original song title but wrote his own lyric which you can read along below. He also played the bass, but what really blew me away was his vocals. I'm sure you all can relate! :)

Jerry Langenfeld added drums, and I arranged the whole thing.

Mixing was difficult for me, so Paulo joined and did a very nice rock/pop mix. I like that mix, but I also wanted to proceed with my own mix as our sonic visions of the song are slightly different. I wanted to concentrate more on the folk/rock aspect, while Paulo took the rock/pop approach. Both are perfectly valid options IMO, and in the meantime we even decided to do another, pure acoustic version of the song.

But enough words now. Listen yourself! :)

Lyrics & Vocals: Eric Savoie
Acoustic Guitar: Dan Clancy
Electric Guitars: Bobby Clohessy
Bass: Alexander Wilden
Drums: Gerald Langenfeld
Composed by Steffen Offermann & Eric Savoie
Arrangement & synthesizer: Steffen Offermann

Mix 1 (Paulo)
Mix 2 (Steffen)

No Tears
(Eric Savoie, 2009)

The sun is rising
with the moon high in the sky
The only time I have is borrowed
The gallows' callin'
and it draws me with its song
The sun won't rise for me tomorrow

No tears, No tears
left for me
No fear, no fear
left in me

fistful of steel
and a midnight state of mind
that woman's diggin' her own grave
I told her once
I told her 15 thousand times
The wind won't wash her sins away

Can't help but love the way
her eyes light up the night
Can't help but hate the way they roam
10,000 tears fill up
the hollow in my soul
and the thoughts I have just chill me to the bone

(Bridge)
I lie here waiting like the night
She crept back in without the light
Our hearts were beating like a drum
And when her eyes refused to lie
I felt the fear inside me die
Forgiveness comes, but not for some

No tears, no tears
left in me
No fear, no fear
left in me

The gallows' callin'
and it draws me with its song
the sun won't rise for me tomorrow
The sun is rising
with the moon high in the sky
the only time I have is borrowed

No tears, no tears
left for me
No fear, no fear
left for me

Steffen,

I would agree with Big Easy and Tricia - both mixes have their charms!!

Good solid tune with great vocals and excellent playing with taste.

Nice warm production to it as well. The "bag-pipe" sounding voice works very well.

Steffen, you have included quite a lot of distorted electric guitar for a 'folk" version  :)

Great job!
Andy

Hi Steffen,

Great to get this one to the finished forum. Both mixes turned out well, I know both you and Paulo spent a lot of time mixing this so thanks to you both. Also Im pleased to be part of a completed song with Eric's great vocals and Jmans ( as always ) excellent drums. Thanks for the gig  ;D

I hope Dan looks in soon Im sure he'll like how this turned out.

A , Great song full of atmosphere - possibly slightly overlong , both mixes have their merits though I still think the mixes aren't quite up to the standard of the song itself. Like you say mixing is difficult, but you learn something from each mix.   If it makes MC artists Vol.III put me down for the remix.  ;)

CD
We never finish a mix... we simply abandon them.
You can't polish a turd, but you can always spray paint it GOLD
Great songs are not written, they are re-witten

Thanks CD for the comments... I don't think I'm an expert mixer, I'm still learning... All the time learning and I come to the conclusion that I'm never happy and I know nothing compared to others  :)

Here's the monkey full featured file.

Sure - it's a folk-rock song! :)

There are actually several different definitions of folk-rock. The original folk-rock style indeed had no electric guitars (and no drums!), but in British folk-rock both are valid instruments.

Nevertheless I'm looking forward to the pure acoustic version without any electric guitars. :)

Steffen,

You do have a point there.

There was a folk festival held in town recently - and a group called "The Decemberists" played. Their set was a great mix of prog-folk with songs comprising of acoustic based parts interspersed with heavy rock guitar laden passages.

Quite enjoyable!! A lot of their music in on You Tube

Cheers
Andy
