Help Wanted - MSc Project

Hi Everyone

I'm seriously considering taking a year out and doing a Post Graduate degree in Creative and Computational Sound. For that I need to propose a project as part of the course (circa 4-5 months). Has anyone got any ideas for a project? Problems that you may have encountered in the past where no via solution exists for example....  I would really appreciate any suggestions... thanks very much in advance.. Mike

I am assuming the project would have to be analytical and science based as opposed to forming a virtual band...creating an album ...and developing a promotional web site .....LOL....that would would be considered too easy I guess

Don't know if Gerk will pick up on this but,.. he probably has the right mix of computer super nerd and musician in him to pose you a problem that he has run into.

I run a small consultancy and specialise in systems/software requirements analysis/design, mostly for avionics equipment for use in Airbus or Fighter Aircraft. This course would harmonize what I can already do with the direction I want to go in.

I think a DAW for drummers is definitely beyond the realms of the realistic

Well.. you never know, I could propose investigating the use of the internet for musical collaboration and how a site might be run to accommodate that

Cool,... then develope a web site and maybe you could call the site "Musical Collaboration Study" or MCS for short.  Where do I come up with this stuff??  If you use that,.. I want royalties!

Here Here... on the DAW for Drummers!!!!  It took me a month to remember I had to TURN ON my Electric Drums...hehehe  Drums with a POWER button....jeez.... what has the world come to....heheheheh

I'm over that little hump now tho....WHEW!  I feel SMART!!!! LOLOLOLOL

I have a couple of interesting ideas off the top of my head, but not sure how deep you can/want to go here ... is there a course syllabi to see?  Or is it kind of open?  Also not sure what you are looking for in terms of a project, do you want to engineer something or do you want to work out things like workflow or process using existing stuff?

Gerk, it would have to be something that is achievable in 4 months, I guess a typical structure would be to state a goal, form a set of requirements, analyse the problem, design and implement it, test it and make conclusions. I imagine an audio fingerprinting algorithm for detection of copyright violation would have been a great example of the kind of thing... e.g. how to recognise a song with a good degree of accuracy, what criteria to use, how to compare with a database for comparison, field testing in an environment like YouTube....

I'm going over to the university today to see if there's anyone there who can give me a few ideas too.

then we'd be into defining a criteria for great ... maybe based on No.1 hits, record sales, actually there could be something in that... analysis of all the past no.1s for specific genres using fingerprint type algorithms with a goal to artificially creating new songs that people instantly like.. hmmmm
