Hey Guys and Gals

I just wanted to thank those of you who contributed in any way to this thread, be it suggestions, ideas, help with the listening tests etc...  I ended up with an overall pass with distinction, which is in effect the top grade... now, do I do my doctorate and if so does anyone have any ideas/suggestions for a thesis?

PS. I did a Master of Science (MSc) in Digital Music Processing, which is the same as Digital Signal Processing, but with a bias towards music and speech (audio)

Some ideas for a phD project (I guess some of these may have been done in various ways)

1. take a monophonic audio input, and generate a supporting chord sequence or harmony from it. It's challenging to assess key signature and time from the input source.

2. generate stereo from mono, or if that's easy then generate surround sound from mono.

3. synthesise missing high audio frequncies in an AM radio receiver, to make it sound more hi-fi.

I still think something to do with audio phase and/or analysis or simulation of mid-side type techniques would be really interesting.  These types of phasing effects can be incredibly useful in a lot of different aspects I think (maybe perceived stereo placement?).  It might be really neat to be able to somehow combine this type of technique with a binaural recording approach ... a way to simulate 3d space within a 2 point audio signal maybe?

Maybe it's just me   Maybe I need to go back to school myself and pursue something like this LOL
