Music/Arrangement/Guitar: Bobby Clohessy
Vocals: Gerry Casey
Bass/Keys: Andy Gupta
Drums: Todd Kane
Mix: Nick Testa
Lyrics: Donna Devine

The lyric idea began to germinate several months ago after I came across a quote from the British actor/writer, Peter Ustinov: "Parents are the bones on which children sharpen their teeth". Yikes!  :o

Donna

Sharpen Our Teeth on Your Bones

(v1)
We take no prisoners, feel no compassion
Make you accountable, mercy's no option
Hold you to promises you broke long ago
When you ruled with false power, but we didn't know

Chorus
We're children rising up
Coming into our own
Bent on retribution
We want restitution
We'll sharpen our teeth
On your bones

(v2)
Nobody warned us life was a battle
You hated each other, trapped us in the middle
You gave us no weapons, so we've fashioned our own
Anyone sinned against, we will cast the first stone

Chorus
We're children rising up
Coming into our own
Bent on retribution
We want restitution
We'll sharpen our teeth
On your bones

Instrumental solo

(v3)
No parental control, we had a latchkey
Video console games, teenage ADD
Crouched in our darkness, frightened and alone
Now we are angry, we're coming after your bones

Bridge
Ritalin solution, no absolution
Offspring revolution

Chorus
We're children rising up
Coming into our own
Bent on retribution
We want restitution
We'll sharpen our teeth
On your bones

Repeat chorus

Donna,

It was great to be part of an A-1 team for this one.

The lyrics were spot on, covering a difficult subject....and then band really pulled it off with some super performances from the musicians - Bobby, Gerry and Todd!!!

I think the song packs an emotional and musical wallop!!!

Thanks for having me along.....

Well done! Love this song!

Best regards
Andy

Thanks, Jay. :)  The guys did a sensational job, with Gerry really nailing the vocals, and of course Nick bringing out the best of everything/everyone in the final mix.
Lyric-wise, the song sure isn't a "comfortable" or "feel-good" one. :P
Still, here are some comments  ;):

Very thought provoking indeed. I could hear the Van Halen'ish quality in the singer's voice too. Good job. I'm gonna have my son (15) listen to this later I think he will really like it. (Vicki)
--------------------------------------------

Nice rockin' tune
STRONG singer/good write. (Calvin)
------------------------------------------

Sounds good, kind of like Van Halen. (Steve)
----------------------------------------

WOW, very cool and scary and true.
You've got some great lines in here.
Musically, the vocal and instrumentation were right-on-target.
Simply marvelous.
They conveyed that sense of Teenage Angst to perfection.  (Beth)

Guys, a couple more kudos rolling in... ;)

Donna

Interesting lyric with an unusual but striking hook, catches
right off the mark and the melody rocks, Gerry's vocals are
on the money and the rest of the guys did really a good job,
I must confess had a little headbang going on to this. (Tony)
-------------------------------------------------------

Great track, super production. a very cool idea and write! (Jerwolf)

And another comment has just trickled past... ;)

Dig this, Donna......
The sound reminds me of Triumph, Michael Schenker, Deep Purple, Dio.....

Excellent....  (Sam)

Hi Donna

Great to see all the interest in "Sharpen", it is such an unusual song lyrically, many thanks for letting us have a bash at it. Be good to team up again sometime, must get this throat of mine in order first!

Cheers!

A couple more kudos for you guys.  ;)

Knowing that this isn't a typical sing-along or feel-good song (I expect plenty of people will hate the lyric and/or the attitude ;D ), I'm pleased when someone takes time to comment, especially on the music/vocals/production, giving praise where it's due.  ;)

Donna

---------------------------------------
Sure is an intense message and an all Around great production of it. Feels very in the moment. Nice job Everyone.  :)  (Joice)
---------------------------------------
My son liked it a lot...I knew when I heard it the first time that he would enjoy it; these type of lyrics help him through the teenage angst he suffers from on occasion. He especially liked the chorus. Your hook can't help but to grab attention. Very nice in an angry sort of way.  ;) (Vicki)
---------------------------------------
Pretty far out of my territory but it seems like good music and delivery in the genre it's intended for.
I expect it would play quite well in certain places.  (Wy)
