For your listening pleasure here is "Portable Door", a tribute to Deep Purple. Portable Door was released as a single from DP's 2024 Album, "=1".

Our line-up was:
  • Vocals/Guitar/Mix&Master: George Williams (napoleonboot)
  • Keyboards: Jay Schankman (j)
  • Bass: Andy Gupta (AndyG6508)
  • Drums: Stephen Smith (Albino)

Most of us have done several DP covers together before, however this time we were joined by the most excellent Jay Schankman on keyboards, replacing Gary Miller (gone but not forgotten  :'(  ). This is the first of the DP covers which I have mixed and mastered, previously Gary did that. These guys are brilliant musicians and a joy to work with. I am very proud of the results here - I have liked all the DP cover we have done, but this one best of all.

The song was written by Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Don Airey, Simon McBride & Bob Ezrin

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When it came to me one day in Jerksville
Man, I was right on the edge
That jacket’s too small for a man of your size
And those socks are too big for your head

[Chorus]
My eyes glaze whatever you say
I’m listening, do tell me more
It goes under the bridge, right over my head
And out through my portable door

[Verse 2]
I was trapped in a dire situation
Between reason and someone-in-law
The winner takes all and runs off with the ball
Nothing could pleasure me more

[Chorus]
Times were, I’d have spoken my piece
For a minute or two held the floor
But I can’t get a word in so here I am hurtling
Right out through my portable door

[Instrumental Section]

[Chorus]
The jabbering’s hurting my brain cells so bad
For once in my life I am bored
The public house beckons, I follow the call
And slip in through my portable door

[Verse 3]
The unlikely event came upon me
I wasn’t prepared for the shock
Once round my neck and twice round the deck
And the rest disappeared up the block

[Chorus]
So here we are and everything’s changed
Faster than ever before
You gotta be jokin’ man, what are you smoking
Blow it out through my portable door

Great job guys, glad to be part of this marvelous collaboration.

Steve pulled out all the stops on the skins, and the technical wizardry from George on guitar and J on keys is simply astounding.

You guys have the chops - totally pro!

Andy

You know, Mr Paice wouldn't be ashamed to have played this the way you did Steve!

Hi, I have just updated the mix in the OP.

Jay invested in an improved Organ sound so resupplied his part. He also added a couple of small synth "swells" in the opening section which are lovely.

I did some minor tweaks to other levels and EQ while I was in there, which resulted in a slightly "heavier" overall sound to the mix.

Fantastic mix, George. The great thing about collab, other than the fun of working with other people and their ideas, is that nothing is truly set in stone, if we feel we can do better. It doesn't hurt to experiemnt. In this case, the extra effort made all the difference. This sounds like it could have been made in an expensive pay-by-the-hour studio.

HI George,

In the remix, everything sounds top class, but the bass has pretty much disappeared.

I liked the way the bass sounded in the previous (final) mix.

I tweaked it just now. I can nudge bass up further if you like. Sorry , I must have knocked the bass level down without realising.
