Mixbux/Ardour. If I can get the VSTs working with the wine bridge it's doable.

Also bought Reaper...It just works!

Mixbux v3 is working great in Linux. Trying out some distros. Have Ubuntu 15.xx whatever is the newest and it works well.

What's promoted the move to Linux Nick ?

I'm still on Sonar 8.5... Didn't like what they did after that so much, also sticking with 32 bit as my Liquid mix doesn't work in 64 bit DAWs even with bit bridge etc. There some great emulations of compressors in that little box it would bug me to lose after spending £409 on it 5yrs ago.

Mostly just trying to get off windows. When I bought mixbus, they let you download all the flavors. So I tried out the Linux and it works nice. The only drawback is all the plugs and vsti's. I like the expanded memory of a 64 bit system.

I split this topic off of the Devil's Ride topic and named it Linux DAWs so we're not hijacking Dave's tune any more ... also it will be a good resource for others looking to move to Linux DAWs in the future.

I actually liked the sound of Mixbus, they did a pretty good job of it.  I never played with it much in Linux so I never did the whole VST thing with it ... but I thought that most VSTs ran in linux pretty easily (or at least at one point they did).

Standard Vsts need som sort of host to run.
There are a couple of them I'm going to try.
A little Sudo this and su that and I should be good to go. I really only have a handful of go to plugs and instruments. I'll keep everyone posted. Linux runs pretty snappy on my old laptop.

A buddy just told me that dssi-vst is the way to go and it's not too difficult.  I haven't played with music stuff on Linux in forever, maybe this winter I might have to fire up a box to play with   For now I'm super super happy with my UAD hardware and plugins on my OSX machine though

CD, your líquido mix sure works with 64 bits windows, never had a problemas with that.

I have been following the distro's. If I ever got that smart I would just make my own. avlinux 8 should be coming out soon w/64bit.

It's two years later. Has anyone really got the linux thing going?

I did get Reaper going with some wine. installed and started right up. No Jack, No ALSA, No Pulse.
I just picked my interface and it worked.

Going to try a new distro tomorrow. Running Mint and KXStudio.

Why don't you use the native Linux version of REAPER? Just download it from Landoleet!

Linux will probably be officially supported starting with REAPER 6. BTW, ARA will also be supported then (but that's irrelevant for Linux users as long as Celemony and others don't port their tools to Linux).

Ardour/Mixbus have become pretty stable too. I'm using Mixbus 32c 4.3, and if/when I'm on Linux, I don't use any Windows VST plugins at all, just native Linux stuff.

I also have Tracktion T7, but I never use it. The GUI is not my cup of tea, and it has no real mixer (Waveform, the successor of T7, does have a separate mixer, but that DAW is still way too stoneage for me).

You may also want to try Bitwig. Not my cup of tea either, but ymmv.

I use UbuntuStudio 16.04, but installed some additional software (basically the KXStudio stuff, to try out Carla).

I paid for the Overtone DSP Linux plugins, and I use the U-HE Linux ports plus some freeware plugins.

Nowhere remotely comparable to the endless options you have with Windows (or Mac), of course, but you definitely can mix and produce on Linux - well recorded tracks assumed.

I broke down and went back to Windows. I couldn't wrap my head around Jack, Carla, Claudia and the rest of them to get my audio stable.

I picked up a new HP Ryzen 5  u2500 Envy x360. Not my first choice, but got a killer deal on it.

I still hate windows 10.

Fired up Cakewalk sonar 8.3. (Can't seem to find my 8.5.3) Worked like a champ.

Cake walk sonar Platinum 2017.... I wish I could by this but they seem to have pulled the plug completely. I would pay and to hell with the updates. Just works great. Running the demo.

someday, Linux will be distributed with an easy to use routing scheme.
