Something a bit different for here. :)

A quick write during the recent FAWM Challenge.

Music & vocals by Shelley Miller

Lyric by me

That Old Crow

V1
That old crow has piercing eyes
Grim and shrewd and bright
Its wings are made of shadows
Harbingers of night

V2
That old crow has eager claws
Sharp and swift and fierce
He’s balanced on the railing
Counting up the years

Bridge
A memory calls
Hauls me back to fields
Of grassy innocence
Where no bird held
A sinister significance

V1
That old crow comes pecking round
Brute and black and bleak
I feel like a strip of tinsel
Hanging from its beak

Outro
My chin has known buttercups
My hair has known daisies
But all of that was long before
I grew up and went crazy

Ah....now then, ladies. This is just beautifully done. The simple Dobro/banjo? structure complimented by a lovely bluesy fresh sounding vocal is magical. The lyrics are rich and dark and full of foreboding. This has so much atmosphere to it that in my mind I'm transported to the Smoky Mountains of Virginia or even the Mississippi cotton plantations and I can see 2 Crows sitting on the old rickety fence.

I've listened at least 6 times.....I love it. American folk music at it's best.

Bravo, ladies.

Gary, Billy, and Nick, a big thank you for listening to this one, and for commenting. :)
Shelley's approach was just brilliant. She went to the roots for sure. :)
