This was written more than 30 years ago about a real place in a small town in Kansas. It was a "Convenience Store" that was way before it's time.
The place was originally built as a Bowling Alley and if you looked closely you could still see the original slopes and strips of hardwood lanes.
Elrod bought the place and turned it into a beer joint / grocery store. That was a concept that was way before it's time here in Kansas. The men could get a gallon of milk and a beer in one trip.
I ran across it while I was working construction in the '70's. It wasn't so much the place, but the force of personality of the man that owned it. That's what inspired this song.
Elrod's Supermarket (Better Than When You Came)
[/size]
Elrod's supermarket is a mighty, mighty fine store,
You can go to Elrod's and find a whole lot more,
Of what you're looking for in life,
Buy a chicken for your wife,
And you'll leave the store feeling better than when you came, (Repeat at end)
Elrod is a good old boy; he'll call you by your name,
If you are a stranger there he knows you just the same,
And the paint outside is worn,
And the window shades are torn,
But then Elrod's supermarket; it ain't for sale,
(Chorus)
Elrod is a hell of a man and the folks all know it's true,
Elrod's a man, who would sell his soul to make a customer out of you,
Elrod has a tavern there he sells a lot of ale,
Come on in and have a glass and tell a fishing tale,
But you'd better have no fights,
Cause Elrod will dim your lights,
He'll throw you out the door; don't come back no more,
If you're dry some Sunday then come around in back,
Elrod will get you something from a big old gunnysack,
And it feels so nice to know,
That you've got somewhere to go,
Elrod will make you happy and keep the change,
(Break, Chorus Pattern)
Elrod's supermarket: it never seems to change,
Nothing's ever out of place, nothing's ever strange,
And you know your friends are there,
And you know that someone cares,
And Elrod's grinning face will meet you at the door,
(Chorus)
(Repeat 1st Verse)[/b]
Thank you to everyone that played and to you whom listen.Preston
